Long term pavement performance (LTPP) study is vital to improve our ability to consider the 'what-ifs' such as changes in legal axle loads and axle configurations, the allocation of budgets, the development of maintenance regimes and the impact of various alternative treatments on pavement performance.

These long term studies require a long term commitment to not only funding but also to the gathering and analysis of data from the various pavement test sites throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Austroads has been formally supporting the establishing and monitoring LTPP sites in Australia since 1994. More recently, the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA) and the Australian Stabilisation Industry Association (AustStab) have become actively involved in the project. This will ensure that a wider range of pavement types will be included in the program than was previously the case.
