Our Laboratories & Capabilities

The ARRB research laboratory has NATA accredited laboratories and equipment for testing. It is a world class research facility employing staff with over 150 years combined experience in bituminous materials research.

ARRB Group has been carrying out research in the following areas since the 1960s:

  • bitumen
  • cement treated materials
  • polymer modified binders
  • sprayed seals
  • asphalt
  • skid resistance.

ARRB can offer clients a comprehensive and quality research and consulting service. Our staff have an international reputation in bitumen and asphalt research and the team can draw on in-house expertise in areas such as pavement design, road maintenance and vehicle loading to solve problems.

The research facility is located in Melbourne, Australia but we have undertaken research and consulting work all over Australia and overseas. Our current clients include Austroads, all state and territory road authorities, urban and rural councils, consultants and contractors. We have also successfully delivered projects in several countries including Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Hong Kong and Ethiopia.

Technical and strategic research program

Bituminous surfacings research aims to improve the ability of road agencies to manage their surfacings assets in response to the emerging freight task and community expectations. The program includes work on optimising the performance of bituminous binders, sprayed seals and ashpalt surfacings including use of polymer modified binders.

Applications & Testing available

Applications include:

  • asphalt mix design
  • visual and physical assessment of sprayed seal condition
  • chemical and physical assessment of bituminous binders
  • forensic investigations into bituminous surfacing failures.

ARRB can also undertake testing of the flow and deformation properties of binders, chemical testing of bituminous binders, physical tests on asphalt and sprayed seals and forensic investigations into poor on-road performance.

Physical asphalt tests include:

  • bulk and maximum density
  • resilient modulus
  • dynamic creep
  • wheel tracking
  • fatigue - four point flexural beam
  • moisture sensitivity
  • gyratory compaction
  • preparation of asphalt slabs.

Bituminous binder testing includes:

  • dynamic shear rheometer
  • elastometer and extensiometer
  • sliding plate and capillary viscometry
  • rolling thin film oven
  • other specialised testing available upon request.

Sprayed seal physical testing includes:

  • seal behaviour
  • viscosity of recovered binder.
