Level 1 Bridge Inspection e-Workshop

Bridges and other structures are crucial asset elements of the infrastructure network. It is essential that their condition is monitored, and repairs are planned and completed in an efficient and timely manner. The systematic inspection and monitoring of these assets are vital components to managing the life cycle of these structures. This 1-day e-Workshop will assist participants to develop the knowledge and skills to conduct Level 1 Inspections in accordance with industry best practice. 

Who should do this course

A Level 1 routine maintenance inspection is required to check the general serviceability of the structure, particularly for the safety of road users, and identify any emerging problems. The e-Workshop is primarily aimed at, but not limited to:

- Road and bridge maintenance field staff
- Existing Level 1 Inspectors
- Leading hands
- Work Supervisors
- Inspectors
- Engineers
- Consultants
- Contractors

It will be beneficial for attendees to have a basic knowledge of bridges and culverts.

What are the topics

This one day e-Workshop will investigate in detail the purpose and basics of a Level 1 bridge inspection, common problems and defects in structures and worked examples on how to undertake inspections, procedures, work health & safety, equipment requirements and completion of inspection reports.

Road Design 101
Online Self-Paced Course


This course introduces the context, concepts and principles underlying the practice of designing roads in Australia, New Zealand and other developed countries - how to provide a safe and more efficient road network for all road users.

The training consists of 5 topics; including a video to watch, reading and quizzes

Who should do the course?
Road design is a fundamental component in the development of the road network; thus having a basic understanding of the road design process, the challenges and constraints experienced during the design process will assist practitioners in the fields of pavements, asset management, maintenance, safety and mining to be a proactive contributor in a design team and enhance their knowledge to apply to their own engineering discipline. This training is beneficial to all graduates working for a road agency or consultant, or any experienced practitioner who wishes to refresh their understanding.

What are the topics?

Topic 1 Overview of road design
The first topic covers the philosophy, principles and purpose of road design, with their link to the Safe System. Geotechnical issues will also be touched on in this session.

Topic 2 - Geometric Design
The next topic discusses geometric design principles in more detail; with specific focus on sight distance, cross sections, horizontal and vertical alignment, and the design of auxiliary lanes.

Topic 3 - Intersections and Roundabouts

Now it’s time to delve into best practice for designing intersections. Both urban and rural types and layouts will be examined, considering both signalised and unsignalised varieties and roundabouts.

Topic 4 - Drainage Design
Let’s not forget the importance of drainage design considerations in the road design process. Environmental considerations, urban and rural hydrology, pavements drainage, piped systems and culverts will be discussed.

Topic 5 - Roadside Design
The final topic discusses the safe and functional design of the roadside environment including safety mitigation strategies. The location and design requirements for pedestrian paths and cycling paths will also be considered.

This course is recognised by ENGINEERS AUSTRALIA for Continuing Professional Development.

Engineers Australia members can choose to record CPD hours for attendance at this event in their personal CPD logs. Members should refer to Engineers Australia’s CPD Policy for details of requirements and conditions.

Basic Geometric Road
Design e-Workshop



The purpose of this e-workshop will provide an understanding of basic geometric road design. This also includes considerations of, the Safe System approach to road safety, extended design domain and whole-of-life costs. 

Good road design will achieve operational efficiency, be safe and cost-effective, be aesthetically pleasing, and minimise the environmental impact. The role of the road designer is to produce the most appropriate design that achieves the specified functionality using the design inputs from all relevant disciplines. 


- Develop a basic understanding of the fundamentals in geometric road design
- Consider key engineering aspects that relate to a road design project
- Apply the knowledge gained through various design exercises to confirm understanding
- Analyse and re-design existing rural roads to achieve a safe, cost-efficient design that considers whole-of-life costs

David Milling - Principal Professional, Transport Safety
David joined ARRB in 2008 with a background in road construction and design. He specialises in road safety auditing, safe system road design, crash investigations, motorcycle safety, heavy vehicle access safety and network safety analysis. David has led or been involved in a number of Austroads projects and has presented nationally and internationally on road safety engineering principles. He currently has a special interest in motorcycle safety and infrastructure management to reduce motorcycle casualties.

Noel O’Callaghan - Principal Professional Engineer, Transport Safety
Noel O’Callaghan joined the Australian Road Research Board as Principal Engineer, Transport Safety in 2015 .  Prior to that, he was the Principal Road Design Engineer for DPTI, providing road design advice across the Department on a variety of projects ranging from local roads to major expressways. He was the South Australian representative on the Austroads Road Design Task Force, and the Safety Barrier Assessment Panel
