ARRB: the first fifty years (book)
By Kieran Sharp, Ray Brindle, Max Lay, John Metcalf, Ian Johnston, Dave Jones
In 2010, ARRB celebrated its first 50 years of road research. During the course of the year, a team of current and former staff prepared a book that documents some of the achievements of its people and their professional colleagues in Australia and New Zealand’s road authorities. The book was only possible because of the dedication of the authors and the contributions and anecdotes of existing and former staff.
An organisation to progress road research in Australia was first recommended in 1924 by William Calder. It wasn’t until 1960 that the Australian Road Research Board was formed, and 1972 when the Australian Road Research Centre was opened in the then outer eastern suburb of Vermont South in Melbourne.
Now known as ARRB Group Ltd, the organisation has significantly progressed road research in Australia for 50 years. During that time there have been major technical, organisational and governance challenges. The book provides an interesting history of research achievements and the people and the organisation behind them.
Copies of the book can be ordered from ARRB by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. During 2011, each copy is $25 plus GST and $7.50 P&H for delivery within Australia. Please email email@example.com for delivery charges outside of Australia.
