Randell "Randy" Iwasaki is the latest thought-provoking international expert to join our impressive keynote speaker bill at both the 28th Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) International Conference and the 8th Symposium on Pavement Surface Characteristics: SURF 2018.
Randy created GoMentum Station - the largest secure autonomous/connected vehicle proving grounds in the United States. He is Executive Director at the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), from where he continues to work with Silicon Valley companies to provide innovative solutions to congestion relief.
Prior to Contra Costa, Randy was appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger in August 2009 as Director of the California Department of Transportation. He led the operation of the California state transportation system, including more than 50,000 lane miles of state highway, intercity passenger rail, and more than 250 general aviation airports.
ARRB Conference delegates will hear Randy discuss the role of the CCTA and some of the innovative work that they are doing to enhance mobility across the Contra Costa County. This session will get our delegates thinking about topics such as vehicle automation, electric vehicles and the focus on providing mobility, rather than moving vehicles.
Randy’s presentation for the SURF Symposium will showcase the change from manual inspection programs to a more automated pavement condition rating system. He will also provide some insights using cell phone cameras mounted on locally owned vehicles using artificial intelligence to help locals with their Pavement Management Systems. Randy will also discuss how surface characteristics impact road noise.
Randy earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, where he currently serves on the School of Engineering’s Dean’s Advisory Council. He also earned a Master of Science Degree in Engineering from California State University, Fresno.
