South Australia's road network becomes more 'green'

ARRB has recently received funding from Green Industries South Australia to work on a project to build local councils’ confidence in incorporating recycled materials and products in their road network.

The project, consisting of five key components, aims to help improve the awareness and confidence of local stakeholders in adopting and increasing the uptake of recycled materials in South Australia’s road networks.

The key components will include:

• Knowledge capture of innovative and sustainable pavement materials containing recycled materials (tyres, plastic and glass)
• Development of a systematic and customised assessment and implementation framework to increase the uptake of recycled material in the South Australian road network
• Environmental implications of incorporating recycled materials into South Australia’s road infrastructure and case studies
• Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on three pavement designs containing optimised or fixed percentages of recycled plastic, crushed glass, and crumb rubber
• Communication and promotion of project outcome through webinars, workshops, promotional material on websites and social media streams.

As well as the above key components, the project looks to contribute to the local circular economy in South Australia via job creation, landfill diversion, reduced life cycle costs and Greenhouse Gas emission reduction.
