September 2020 - Dates TBC

Join us for this webinar series – There's been a crash on our network - What do we do now?

When a crash has occurred on the public road network, what happens then? This series examines why incidents should be investigated before identifying and briefly comparing what typically happens now and good practice on what activities should happen next.

Join our experts who will take you through best practice when faced with an incident on your network. Enjoy a rich learning experience, taking attendees through established chronology and reactive, proactive and predictive techniques. The series is a carefully designed mix of live webinars by our experts, online activities and quizzes to embed and enhance your knowledge. You will have access to our experts for questions throughout the live webinars and also online through the dedicated discussion board.

This series of webinars, prepared by a number of ARRB’s Transport Safety experts is aimed at a wide audience, including public and private sector road practitioners, logistics operators, researchers and industry partners in the context of road safety.

What are the topics?

Webinar 1

An incident has occurred - what should be the first response?
Presenters: Paul Hillier, Tia Gaffney

Webinar 1 will start by examining why incidents deserve to be investigated and which parties typically conduct an investigation and with what objectives. We’ll show how investigators typically preserve a scene with the objective of identifying and securing physical evidence. The importance of following strict protocols in commencing and progressing an internal investigation will also be covered.

Webinar 2

What happened?
Presenters: Paul Hillier, David McTiernan

This webinar will focus on establishing and collating the facts and data relating to both the incident and the location to enable the causation and contributory factors to be identified. Activities such as desk studies, crash data analysis and post incident site visits are examined. Reactive techniques such as Treatment of Crash Locations (sometimes called blackspot engineering) are also introduced.

Webinar 3

What should we do in response to prevent further crashes?
Presenterss: David McTiernan, David Milling

This session provides guidance on how to identify potential risk mitigation options, with a focus on engineering / infrastructure measures and selecting the most appropriate of these for further consideration. The session with also look at supporting concepts such as the crash reduction and crash modification factors, the availability of compendiums and toolkits, Safe System alignment and mass action / route based approaches

Webinar 4

Effectiveness - Did our mitigation measures work?
Presenters: Paul Hillier (Facilitator), Peter Cairney

This webinar starts by explaining the importance of a road agency / network operator evaluating the risk mitigation measures effected in response to an incident/s. A range of models, tools and methodologies will be introduced in terms of their objectives, resource/data requirements and practical experiences in their implementation.

Webinar 5

Isn't it better that we predict where crashes might occur?
Presenters: David McTiernan, Noha Elazar

This session is all about proactive and predictive approaches to road safety. It will look at the role of available and emerging risk assessment tool and items such as road stereotyping and Safe System alignment of designs. This session will be supplemented by a work task on Schoology.

Webinar 6

Bringing it all together
Presenters: Paul Hillier, David McTiernan, Tia Gaffney, Peter Cairney

This session is all about proactive and predictive approaches to road safety. It will look at the role of available and emerging risk assessment tool and items such as road stereotyping and Safe System alignment of designs. This session will be supplemented by a work task on Schoology.
