VicRoads and REAAA Technical Seminar, 30 May 2011

Outcomes from recent ARRB road safety research

Austroads provides a forum for Australian and New Zealand road agencies to work together to achieve common objectives and to promote consistency in their operations. ARRB undertakes research and provides consulting services and technical expertise to road agencies and the wider road industry.

Austroads and ARRB work in partnership to maximise the benefits they can provide their members and other stakeholders. The partnership provides for programs of research to be undertaken by ARRB to maintain technical expertise in five key areas:

1. Asset management
2. Network operations
3. Pavements
4. Surfacings
5. Road safety engineering

Blair Turner, Principal Research Scientist at ARRB will provide a summary of outcomes from recent road safety research at ARRB, including that from the Austroads program. This will include coverage of research on speed management, roadside safety, fatigue management, Safe System implementation and the safety benefits of ITS. The presentation will also provide brief background on the recently launched Decade of Action for Road Safety. There will also be an opportunity to discuss VicRoads research needs, and the future Austroads research program.
